What Sources Does ChatGPT Cite When Recommending B2B Software?

We checked the sources ChatGPT cites across 5 B2B software categories. TechRadar showed up most, G2 led by volume, and every category had its own niche sites.

When ChatGPT recommends a piece of B2B software, it is repeating what a small set of websites already said. We wanted to know which ones. So we pulled the sources ChatGPT cited across five software categories and looked for the pattern.

TL;DR: no single website owns ChatGPT's software recommendations. Across five B2B categories, the most consistent source was TechRadar, a tech-media site, which showed up in four of the five. G2 was cited most by volume but appeared in only three, and Gartner in two. Underneath them, every category had its own niche review, comparison, and stats sites doing real work. So "get listed on G2" is a start, not a plan.

This matters because buyers now ask ChatGPT which software to buy. G2 found that half of B2B software buyers start research in an AI chatbot before Google. And the sources feeding those answers are concentrated: 5W's State of AI Citations 2026 found the top 15 domains absorb about 68% of all AI citations, with Reddit now the most-cited source across engines. If you know which sites shape your category, you know where to work.

How we checked

We used SupaIntent's AI Brand Index, which tracks how AI tools rank and cite brands by category, and read five B2B software reports with the filter set to ChatGPT: CRM, project management, help desk, email marketing, and marketing automation. For each, we recorded the domains ChatGPT cited, then looked at what recurred. The methodology explains how the weekly rankings are collected and combined. It is a snapshot from live reports, so the exact numbers move over time.

The sources ChatGPT cites most across B2B software

Ranked by how many of the five categories each source appeared in:

Source Appears in What it is
TechRadar 4 of 5 Consumer and business tech media
G2 3 of 5 Software review platform
Gartner 2 of 5 Analyst firm
Forbes 1 of 5 Business media
Niche review, comparison, and stats sites 1 each saascrmreview.com, topemailtools.com, worldmetrics.org, businesscomparisons.co.uk, supportcompare.com, topadvisor.com, liquidityfeed.com
Vendors' own pages recurring Official product and pricing pages

The surprise is at the top. The source ChatGPT leaned on most consistently was not a review giant, it was TechRadar, a tech-media outlet, cited in four of the five categories. G2 was often the single biggest source where it appeared, but it was missing from ChatGPT's CRM and email marketing answers entirely. Gartner was strong in marketing automation and CRM, and absent everywhere else.

Insight: There is no universal "ChatGPT source." The review giants matter, but inconsistently. Tech media and category-specific sites show up more than most brands expect.

It changes by category

The same five categories, and the sources ChatGPT actually cited in each:

Category Top ChatGPT sources
CRM saascrmreview.com, techradar.com, businesscomparisons.co.uk, liquidityfeed.com, gartner.com
Project management g2.com, techradar.com
Help desk g2.com, worldmetrics.org, freshworks.com, supportcompare.com, topadvisor.com
Email marketing forbes.com, techradar.com, topemailtools.com
Marketing automation gartner.com, g2.com

Look how different these are. CRM runs on a niche review site and comparison pages, with G2 nowhere in sight. Project management is basically G2 plus TechRadar. Email marketing pulls in Forbes and a niche tool-comparison site. The "sources that decide your visibility" question does not have one answer, it has one answer per category.

Insight: A source that dominates one category can be absent from the next. Audit your own category rather than assuming the usual names.

What to do about it

If you want ChatGPT to recommend your software, work the sources it actually reads, in this order:

  • Find your category's real sources first. Run your buyer prompts in ChatGPT and note the domains it cites, or track them per prompt. Do not assume, because the mix is different in every category.
  • Cover the review and analyst layer. G2, Gartner, and Capterra still matter where they appear, so keep those profiles complete, current, and accurate.
  • Do not stop there. Earn coverage from tech media like TechRadar and from the niche review, comparison, and stats sites specific to your space, which recur more than most teams realize.
  • Keep your own pages tidy. Vendors' official product and pricing pages get cited too, so make yours clear and consistent.
  • Do not ignore community. Reddit is the most-cited source across AI engines overall, even when it is not in a single category snapshot.

Takeaway: "Get on G2" is table stakes, not a strategy. The brands ChatGPT recommends are the ones present across the specific mix of sites their category runs on, and that mix is something you can measure.

For the trust layer behind those citations, connect this source work with the trust signals AI looks for and how AI builds a picture of your business from profiles and reviews.

How we compiled this

The source lists come from SupaIntent's AI Brand Index, read with the ChatGPT filter across the five categories linked above. We counted how often each domain appeared and how broadly it recurred. The reports are live and update over time, so treat this as a point-in-time study, not a fixed ranking. For a single-category deep dive, see the CRMs ChatGPT recommends.

FAQs

What sources does ChatGPT cite when recommending B2B software?

No single site. Across five B2B categories we checked, TechRadar was the most consistent source (four of five), G2 was cited most by volume but appeared in three, and Gartner in two. Beneath them, each category had its own niche review, comparison, and stats sites, plus the vendors' own pages.

Does ChatGPT rely on G2 and Gartner for software recommendations?

Sometimes, not always. G2 showed up in three of the five categories and Gartner in two, but both were missing from others. Neither led ChatGPT's CRM or email marketing answers, for example. They help where they appear, but they do not guarantee a recommendation.

Why do ChatGPT's sources differ by software category?

Because it pulls from whatever it trusts for that specific topic, and each category has its own strong review, comparison, and community pages. A domain that dominates one category can be absent from the next, so the source mix is category by category.

How do I find which sources ChatGPT uses for my category?

Run your category's buyer prompts in ChatGPT and note which domains it links, or use a tool that extracts the citations behind each answer. Check per category and re-check over time, since the mix shifts as models update.

Do reviews and directories still matter for AI recommendations?

Yes, review platforms and directories are among the sources AI engines read. But they are one input, not the whole answer. Tech media, category-specific comparison sites, community platforms like Reddit, and your own accurate pages all feed the recommendation too.
